Two weeks since a post?? Where have I been? Well, 2 weekends ago I went to Houston for Chris's cousin's wedding and his grandfather's 90th birthday. I would post photos from that except something was wrong with the settings on our camera and all the photos turned out weird and grainy. So that was fun, and on the way back we got to fly business class.... mmmm.... flying is such a different experience when you get to fly business class. You can get up whenever you want and the chairs are comfy.
This past weekend Chris and I cleaned up the apartment some and got furniture at IKEA and hung out with friends and ate at our favorite restaurants and went and looked at kitty cats (!) and yesterday we went geocaching at El Corte de Madera OSP. The weather was beautiful and it was a wonderful relaxing weekend. Oh, also I knitted whenever I got the chance - I can't wait to be done with this shawl - it's lovely and fun but it takes so long to knit.

Pinnacles and Sailing
Last weekend I led a trip to Pinnacles National Monument which turned out to be way cooler than I expected. The rock formations there were really amazing and I got to see condors and do a little caving. I've posted the pictures here. It was supposed to be an overnight trip - we had reservations in the Pinnacles Campground. But in the evening after we'd finished hiking we all agreed we would just rather sleep in our own beds, so we all went home and I slept so well that night!
Sunday we went sailing out of Santa Cruz. I convinced Chris to not work for a change and we cruised around Santa Cruz in a 46 foot boat that Shannon and Carlson had chartered. It's the same size as the boat we're going to be on in Greece and in fact 5 of the 9 people going to Greece were there, so we had a chance to practice docking and everything. Poor Chris got sea sick - we think because of the ocean swell. There's no swell in the bay so usually he doesn't have any troubles. There's also not much well in the Mediterranean so probably he'll be fine there too. I'm getting so excited for that trip!
Lets see... I started a new blog for knitting only, and it's located here. Why a knitting only blog you ask? Well, I've decided to do this thing called the Amazing Lace, which is basically an online Knit Along for the purpose of knitting lace this summer, which I'm doing anyway. Click on the link to the right of that blog to learn more about it. There's a whole online knitting-blogging community that I'm hoping to get to be a part of at least a little bit. Anyway. I'll probably post to that blog much less than this one even, though for the contest (yeah, it's a contest - aren't knitters weird?) I'll have to post every 2 weeks at least.

Lots of random photos
I don't know where else to post these photos, so here they are.

Julia and I at the Cache In Trash Out event on Davenport Beach. Why am I always so weirdly squinty in these photos?

The mountain of trash we carried out of Davenport Beach. We left a bunch of trash too - there was just too much to carry out. In some places it looked like people had pulled up with a dump truck. Very sad.

The group of cachers.
This image is hillarious, especially in conjunction with the comment from the blog I found it on: "Would you look at this poor guy? Too ashamed to face the camera, ears back. He's a portrait of doggy sorrow." The other comments are very funny too. Read them all here
Another photo blatently stolen from Julia. This time I'm weird and squinty on top of Mission Peak. That was a very fun adventure too.
Next we have science class with Chris. Did you ever hear that if you stick a Coke in the freezer and forget about it, it would explode? Did you think that was an urban myth? Well, it's not. Here's proof.
Mmmm... juicy...

Poltergeist
If you didn't know better, you might think a poltergeist lived at our house. At most times when you walk into the kitchen, all of the cabinet doors are open. Also, all the dresser drawers on a dresser in our bedroom seem to always be wide open. One particular dresser... my dresser... Chris laughs.
He also laughs because whenever I come back from the grocery store I have a couple of bags full of orange food. Today it was carrots and cheetos, plus, if you're being generous about your color definitions, hummus, corn chips, salsa (in orange bottles!) and refried beans. (Ok, those last ones are all mostly brown.) He laughed especially hard the time we were standing at the checkout lane and realized I was purchasing cheetos, orange bell peppers, carrots and frosted mini-wheats (bright orange box).

Cat!
I forgot the best news of all, the landlord gave us permission (with very reasonable lease terms) to get a cat! Yay! We hope to do that when we get back from Greece. Woo hoo!
Weekly rundown
Lots to report today. First off, pictures from New Hampshire are now posted, along with some random other photos from just before the trip. I learned a lesson in New Hampshire which was, when someone tells you "Oh there's no poison ivy here" don't trust them. On Wednesday I got a really bad itchy rash on the underside of my arm. I have no idea how I got poison ivy there, but that's clearly what it is and I clearly was therefore out running around in some. Blegh. At least it's not the measles, which is what I called my mom and told her I had. Blegh. Oh, if you want the full experience of the New Hampshire serenade, by the way, play this link when you come to those photos!
Last week I built rockets with the young astronauts, had dinner with Seebany and watched Bride and Prejudice (we are connoisseurs of Pride and Prejudice versions) and saw a totally hilarious talk by Jorge Cham on the power of procrastination. If you're a grad student and you haven't read his comic strip then you aren't really living. Although today's isn't a fabulous example of his hilarity - I don't even get it. I guess it's part of a story arc or something.
This weekend was awesome. On Saturday I tried on bridesmaid (well, groomsmaid actually) dresses for Ken's wedding and picked out the dress below in black. (We were given some flexibility about the dresses.) I was pleased to find that this dress fit me best in a size 8 - I didn't even wear that size in high school.

Next I went and hung out with Brandy and Amelia and went to the Mountain View art and wine festival. The weather is so beautiful here now - it was great to get outside. Then I went grocery shopping and got supplies and came home and Chris and I had a dinner party for our friends from his lab. We made quiche and strawberry shortcake. The quiche had homemade crust - Chris's specialty and in my opinion the best ever - and I made the quiche filling. Everyone said it was excellent, so we were really pleased with the whole dinner.
Then yesterday Julia and I had one of our geocaching death marches. We went to Mission Peak and hiked for 8 hours, covering 11.5 miles, 2 peaks (Mission Peak and Mt. Allison), and finding 23 geocaches. Whew. I'm so tired today but I love those adventures. Then last night Chris and I finally got our plane tickets to Greece. I'm looking forward to that trip a lot. Yay!

Convex sets and Sugar Hill
Whoa. Over lunch today Chris and I had a big discussion about whether or not the simplex of all things edible is a subset of the edible set. Must have had a good weekend for me to be willing to spend all lunch discussing something that nerdy. Ha.
This weekend we went and saw Laughton and Becky get married in Sugar Hill, NH. At first I wasn't so excited about the whole destination wedding thing. I told Chris this and it prompted a discussion about exactly is a destination wedding. I'm kind of leaning towards any wedding where neither the bride nor groom nor any part of their family is able to stay overnight in their own home. That kind of classifies Enakshi's wedding in Princeton as a destination wedding, but I kind of thought as Princeton as our home for so long that I didn't see it as a destination wedding at the time.
Anyway we all (mostly all) stayed at this one bed and breakfast in Sugar Hill and all our meals were there and the wedding was there. It was very fun to be able to spend so much time with everyone. (Also, for me when feeling introverted, it was fun to just be able to nip upstairs for a little quiet time.) On Saturday we went hiking in Franconia State Park, which is a very cool place. I'll post photos soon of all the cool water features. It made me start thinking again about my dream to through-hike the Appalachian Trail. The AT runs through this park.
The wedding was really nice too - very pretty outdoors and the dancing afterwards was fun. As usual it was great to see Chris's friends and also meet Ab & Dave's little girl for the first time.
I did some knitting while away but discovered that I pretty much can't knit lace unless NOTHING else is going on. I think I spent as much time unknitting on this trip as knitting, and in the end decided I better just finish a pair of socks I had along rather than get brain strain trying to concentrate on lace.
