Happy baby

I kind of wish this shirt said "Hello World!" instead, but I'm nerdy like that.

Bode

People ask me a lot if this pregnancy was different from the last one and I haven't really written anything in awhile so I thought I'd write on this subject just so I'll remember.

Sickness: I was more sick with Geneva than with Bode, but for less time.  With Geneva I felt pretty wretched until week 17, and then it was like I was human again.  I don't remember any particular discomfort even when I was very pregnant with G (although I did sleep quite a bit at the end). With Bode I mostly just felt tired.  Well, exhausted really, for the entire time.  The whole family got some sort of cold around Christmas time and I just wanted to sleep 20 hours a day.  My OB reported that all her patients report this in their second pregnancy.  Geneva was such a good kid and I really felt like I wasn't chasing her around that  much but maybe I was?  Also, with Bode I was feeling quite uncomfortable toward the end - I just felt full, I guess I'd say.  Not that shocking given that he came out at 9 lbs 15 oz.

Eating:  With G I had an aversion to most foods with strong taste or smell, especially in the first trimester (when Brandy told me I ate like a toddler - the food had to be white or I wasn't going to eat it.  A pale yellow was also ok).  With Bode I was able to eat anything at any time.  At various points I craved very sour food and toward the end I really wanted very hot food.  Chris usually eats much hotter foods than I do and yet I was eating the "extra hot" salsa and reporting that it wasn't that spicy, while it was making him sweat.  Very weird.  I'm hoping this means that he'll be a better eater than she is (seriously, how many meals in a row can a kid eat chicken nuggets?).

The birth: I was prepared for a c-section on the second go, so it all seemed very familiar to me.  I had thought I recovered quickly from the first one, but I was out of the hospital much more quickly with the second one, so I guess I recovered faster too.  I wasn't as emotional this time as with Geneva.  With her birth I cried like crazy and within the first 24 hours was crying because I wanted to have 12 children.  I was very anxious to see Bode but not tearful about it, and never had the emotional crying thing about more children (or the emotional paranoia thing that made me sure I was going to die in the first 2 weeks after she was born, or near as many of the hormonal migraines that I had with Geneva... I think there just must be much less of a hormone swing with him).  I have really been liking everything about having an infant again though. If I didn't have to be pregnant again I'd be all ready for number 3.

Nursing: So much easier with number two!  In part I'm realizing that Geneva was kind of indifferent to nursing (she's very consist about her disinterest in food).  Bode is really excited about his meals.  Also, my experience with nursing means that within the first couple days with Bode I was able to nurse him in ways that took me months to learn with Geneva.  Now we're doing nursing maneuvers that I never could get to work with Geneva.  It helps that he's really determined to not break his latch.

Sleeping: I don't remember that well, but I think Geneva was a better sleeper.  We had her sleeping in her bouncy seat and in her crib from the very beginning.  We're hard pressed to get Bode to sleep if he's not in contact with one of us.  We've been letting him sleep in bed with us so that I can nurse him any time he wants and I still get to sleep, but Chris is very worried about the safety of such an arrangement. We never worried about Geneva's sleeping (until she was 15 months and seemed to just not really sleep anymore).

There's probably other things to write about but Bode isn't that happy that I'm typing instead of focusing all my attention on nursing him so I'm going to take off.  I should write about Geneva's response to the baby soon because everyone asks us about that.  Maybe tomorrow.
